How will I be charged?

Tollgate Hire charge by the day. Each day is 24 hours from the time the vehicle is collected, until it is returned. Payment is by Credit or Debit Card only. ( Cash will not be accepted under any circumstances.)

How much is the deposit?

£100 in addition to the rental charge. (The deposit amount will be raised where Tollgate Hire Limited feel it is necessary to do so).

What details will Tollgate Hire require before renting?

  1. Driving Licence. ( Card or Old style paper licence.)
  2. A Check Code or Recently printed (within 3 days) copy of your Driving Licence Details from the DVLA, Or your National Insurance Number.
  3. Recent proof of address i.e. utility bill or bank statement within the last 2 months.

How can I access details of my driving licence?

Now the paper section of the driving licence is invalid all details of endorsements can be accessed via the Gov.UK website – Check your driving licence details.

You can print the details off to bring with you, or produce a “Share Code” which you can supply along with your driving licence, so that we can access your details from the DVLA.

Do you have a drop off facility for out of hours returns?

Yes. Tollgate Hire vehicles can be returned 24/7. This is especially popular on a Sunday evening.

Who insures the vehicle?

Tollgate Hire will arrange Fully Comprehensive Insurance for you or you can elect to use your own insurance. (Subject to Tollgate Hire’s terms and conditions.)

Can we park at Tollgate Hire, when we are renting a vehicle?

Yes. Tollgate Hire has a customer car park that can be accessed whilst we are open for business, Please ask for details.

Can we have additional drivers?

Providing that the extra driver meets our rental criteria we can add another driver, Before driving, additional drivers need to sign the appropriate “additional driver form” at our depot and produce their driving licence and National Insurance Number. Each additional driver can be added to the hire at a minimal cost of £10.00 per person for the entire duration of the hire.

What happens if I breakdown?

All Tollgate Hire rental vehicles are covered with 24hour roadside assistance. The emergency number can be found within the vehicle. Tollgate Hire also has it’s own mechanics and recovery vehicles to ensure that problems are dealt swiftly, with the minimum delay.

Out of Hours Emergency Numbers can be located either on the lower left hand side of the windscreen, (where the Tax Disc used to be) or ( Mercedes Vehicles Only ) on the inside of the drivers door pillar.

How can we find out how much weight a vehicle will carry?

Our trained staff will be more than happy to advise of the most efficient way to transport your load, please don’t hesitate to ask!We can help you with journey costing, route planning and safe loading, please ask!

Can I take the vehicle to a local amenity site? (local refuse tip)

Yes. However, the local authorities usually ask for a copy of the rental agreement and a utility bill to prove that you live in the district of the amenty site, Also we can advise on which van will be best, as height barriers very often limit some types of van.

Can we pay by credit or debit card?

Yes. However American Express and Dinners Card is not accepted.

Can we arrange a Corporate Account?

Yes. For regular users convenient Corporate Accounts can be arranged (subject to status)

What is the minimum age to rent from Tollgate Hire?

The minimum age for vans is 21, cars 25, people carriers and buses 30.

Outside of normal opening hours, vehicles can be returned to Tollgate Hire at your convenience, day or night, using our special drop-off facility.

This is especially popular for the weekend user who prefers not to have to return their vehicle on Monday, and having to take time out of work to do so.


If the worst should happen, whether you are in Paris or Aberdeen, assistance is just a phone call away. Our Roadside Assistance and recovery is on hand 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Tollgate Hire can provide a replacement vehicle if necessary and will do all it can to ensure you and your load makes its destination as planned.


We accept most major credit and debit cards. Corporate accounts can be arranged for the regular business user (subject to status).
